I travelled to
the lovely city of New Brunswick, New Jersey to check out the soul/R&B
group Burgundy, at the Old Bay Restaurant's Bourbon Street Cafe. I ran
into Sharieff Ali, the group's leader, and we were discussing his activities
with other local musical groups. The group began setting up their equipment
around 9:50pm.
At 10:30pm, Burgundy
began with some hot R&B tunes. The group personnel included Sharieff Ali
(lead vocals & guitar), Melinda (background vocalist), Tammy (background
vocalist), "Sugar Bear" (background vocalist), Carlos (percussion),
Justin (drums), Chip (bass), and a saxophonist. The group performed on a small
stage across from a set of dining tables.
The
performance at the Old Bay Restaurant was as wonderful as their performance at
the AFRA-FUNKA-DEZIAC show in New York City on
May 7, 1998. The tunes were wonderfully-crafted, especially "Fly on
the Wall", "Hold Onto Me", and "I Do"!!!
I had to leave
around 11:20pm to catch the last train to Philly so I missed the last 25
minutes (the first set ended at 11:45pm). The group had a second set at 12
midnight that ended around 1:30am.
